The modern caldera shape is the result of three separate caldera-forming eruptions between 36,000and 16,000 years ago. The remnants of post caldera-forming eruptions are also evident on both the caldera floor, in the form of pumice rings, and on the outer flanks of the volcano, where steep-sided scoria cones lead down to the ocean.
